How to read directory status labels

Every company card on Air Taxi Landing can show a small status pill — Active, Paused, Defunct, Acquired, or Status unknown. That pill is a catalog field. It answers a narrow question: how this directory currently files the program. It does not say the aircraft is safe, certified, cheap, or for sale.

What each pill means here

  • Active — the catalog treats the program as an ongoing entry based on the sources listed on the company page. Active is not a promise that passenger or cargo service is available where you live.
  • Paused — public reporting used for this catalog describes a slowdown, hold, or uncertain commercial path, while the company is still listed for reference. Paused is not a safety finding.
  • Defunct — the independent program is treated as ended in this catalog (for example insolvency or cessation of operations in the sources on that page). Defunct does not erase related lineage that may live under another company.
  • Acquired — the catalog records a reorganization or acquisition that continues some form of the work under new ownership. Read the company summary for the sourced wording; this site does not invent deal terms.
  • Status unknown — public updates are too thin for this catalog to pick Active, Paused, or Defunct with confidence. Unknown is a gap in the directory, not a finding about the aircraft.

Status is separate from autonomy chips (manned, autonomous, optionally piloted) and from certification-stage phrases. A paused company can still be tagged manned. A defunct company can still show vehicle or mission chips so you can see what the entry was about. Manned, autonomous, or optionally piloted? · How to read certification stage labels.

Active

Most of the directory sits here. Open a name for the short summary and the official-site link. The count below tracks the same company list as the full catalog, so it moves when that list is updated.

18 companies currently tagged Active, including Aerofugia (Geely), Archer Aviation, ARIDGE (formerly XPENG AeroHT), Ascendance Flight Technologies, AutoFlight, BETA Technologies, and others.

Paused

These entries are still in the directory so you can read what was publicly described, and why this catalog marked them paused. The tagline after each name is not a schedule or a restart date.

Defunct

These entries stay visible for history and for lineage notes on related pages. A Defunct pill is not a claim about patents, staff, or successor brands beyond what the company summary itself says.

  • Kitty Hawk (Cora lineage) — Defunct. Defunct eVTOL pioneer; Cora program lineage continues via Wisk Aero
  • Lilium — Defunct. German ducted-fan eVTOL Jet program; insolvent / assets in administration
  • Overair — Defunct. Butterfly tiltrotor eVTOL; ceased operations (2025); IP/staff links to Archer reported

Acquired

The catalog uses Acquired when sourced reporting describes a reorganization or acquisition that continues some of the work.

  • Volocopter — Acquired. German multicopter eVTOL pioneer; reorganized under Diamond Aircraft / Wanfeng after insolvency

Status unknown

Sparse public updates kept these entries in the catalog without a firmer Active, Paused, or Defunct choice.

  • Sabrewing Aircraft — Status unknown. US autonomous VTOL cargo UAV (Rhaegal); limited recent public footprint

What a status pill does not claim

  • It is not a certification result. Certification phrases, when present, live on their own line.
  • It is not a safety ranking, a fare, a seat count, a range, or a route map.
  • It is not an endorsement. Active companies are not “recommended,” and Paused or Defunct companies are not ranked against each other.
  • It can lag the news. Always read the company summary and the official site linked on that page before you treat a status as current.
